Adapted from Mireille Juchau’s award winning novel The World Without Us, THE HIVE is an extraordinary, vivid drama of secrets and survival, family and community, loss and renewal.
When Evangeline Müller’s husband finds human bones in the hills behind their honey farm, on land that once belonged to a utopian commune called The Hive, he doesn’t tell her. He’s afraid to know who the bones belong to, how they died, and how his wife might be connected to a mystery locked deep in her amnesia, containing old secrets and shames, that could threaten Evangeline and her already fragile family. Set in the sub-tropical hinterlands of an alternative towncalled Bidgalong, it is a place marked by the existence – and subsequent loss – of The Hive, a commune in the hills that disintegrated thirteen years’ earlier, after a mysterious fire. Many former “hivers” – including Evangeline – and are unable, or unwilling, to leave, bound by remnants of the Utopian dream, and insecure in the outside world. There is a sense of secrets not told, and of unfinished business, and a mourning that’s not yet done.
